Stashkit Folding Bicycle Helmet

By now we all know the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike whether you’re on a trail or a busy street. And while current helmet designs are very effective at reducing head injuries they can also be a pain when you’ve reached your destination and have to then carry it around.

So the Stashkit is a bike helmet that can actually be folded up when not in use taking up about 40% less volume than a conventional helmet would. When collapsed the helmet also has a ‘unique’ crescent shape that is easy to stash inside a bag, backpack or even a briefcase but that ‘feature’ seems more like marketing spin to me. Still, I’d much rather carry this helmet around if I had the choice. Of course the Stashkit exceeds the safety requirements as outlined in Europe but for some reason it currently can’t be sold in the US.

So if you live across the pond from us the Stashkit helmet can be found at Chain Reaction Cycles for about $90.

GlucoPhone: What Can’t Cell Phones Do?

Glucophone

By Evan Ackerman

Maybe your cell phone plays music. Maybe it plays videos. Maybe it lets you surf the web. And maybe it even lets you make the occasional phone call. But can it check your blood sugar? That’s right, the hot new cellphone feature is now a built-in glucose meter. GlucoPhone is a module that attaches to some Verizon cell phones that uses small blood samples and test strips to check your blood sugar levels.

Glucophone

You can also download software into your phone that tracks and records your glucose levels, and then sends them to your doctor (or anyone else who might be concerned about those extra donuts). Currently it’s only compatible with the Verizon LG5200 phone, but more models should be forthcoming.

Golf Launchpad Probably More Realistic Than Using A Mouse

Golf Launchpad (Image courtesy Prezzybox)

While I enjoy a round of Tiger Woods PGA Tour on the Nintendo Wii I’m pretty sure my skills with the Wiimote won’t exactly translate to an actual golf club. So for a more realistic golfing simulation in the comfort of your home the Golf Launchpad seems like the way to go.

The device looks like a small patch of artificial turf and includes a high quality tethered golf ball made from Dupont Surlyn. You use your own golf clubs to hit the ball and the clubhead’s speed, path and angle are automatically measured by a series of optical sensors on the Launchpad. This information is then translated to a copy of Tiger Woods PGA Tour running on your PC or laptop (via USB) and you’ll see your actual swing played out on the virtual course. The system is even sensitive enough to allow you to practice your putting but you’ll want to be careful about throwing your clubs into that virtual water hazard when you don’t make par.

The PC version of the Golf Launchpad is available from Prezzybox.com for about $450 but there’s also a slightly cheaper PS2 version available for about $400.

Rocklighter.com Simulates A Flame On Your Cellphone

Rock Me (Image courtesy Rocklighter.com & Samsung)Go to any rock concert and you’ll quickly realize that cellphones have already replaced lighters when it comes to waving something in the air. But even if you prefer the safety of a backlit cellphone screen over an open flame you probably still miss the warm glow that only a thousand lighters can produce.

So the next time you’re rocking out you might want to point your phone’s browser to Rocklighter.com. The site is basically just an animated GIF of an actual lighter flame that is stretched to fill any browser window no matter how large or small it may be. That way you can guarantee the rock won’t stop at least until your phone’s battery dies.

Sony Introduces Stylish ‘Infrared Ray’ Remotes

Sony Infrared Ray Remotes (Images courtesy AVING USA)

I’ve often been tempted to upgrade my TV remotes to something more worthy of a guy who writes about gadgets all day but unfortunately they’re the rare devices in my home that don’t get a lot of TLC. And every few months when they inevitably need to be replaced I choose a cheap Sony universal remote which is why I’m particularly excited to see these new low-end models being released.

The RM-PZ1FD, RM-PZ1SD and RM-PZ1D come in 3 distinct styles and besides being water resistant the remotes also use a three infrared LED system allowing them to be used in a wider angle around your TV. I’m particularly fond of the wide layout used on the RM-PZ1FD model but unfortunately it seems like these new remotes are only destined for the Japanese market at the moment.

SD Card Eating Phone Strap

SD Card Eating Phone Strap (Images courtesy Funshop.co.kr)

Here’s a great idea for anyone who likes to add unnecessary bulk to something that’s already slim and compact. This SD card holder looks like a miniature masked Mexican wrestler and its sole purpose is to hang off your cell phone and hold a single memory card.

Sure the novel way it appears to ‘eat’ your SD card is somewhat clever but to be honest what cellphone even uses SD cards as a storage format anyways? From what I’ve seen miniSD and even microSD has that market all wrapped up so maybe this should actually be advertised as a digital camera charm instead.

You can pick one up from Funshop.co.kr for about $10.
