Waterproof Laptop: Necessity or Novelty?

This can definately be a VERY handy new addition!

I’ve certainly had my fair share of spills and accidents on my laptop and computer keyboard. Thankfully companies like Sony Japan are realizing that a simple coffee and tea break can turn into a disaster if your laptop were to get spilled on. Featured on Gearfuse, this VAIO type G notebook uses a built-in drainage system to protect your laptop from liquid. In the event of a spill, it will automatically turn off—although I’m curious to know whether this will prevent electrical shortages and corrosion. The LCD screen is also said to withstand scratches, making this laptop quite the durable little gadget. The G notebooks are set to go on sale October 6th in Japan with a price tag of $1500 and upwards, depending on personal customization. While a good investment for travelers and people who work outdoors, it may not be for everyone. Would you pay a premium for a waterproof laptop? Waterproof laptop: necessity or novelty? Google Perfume: Love It or Leave It?

I

happen to love this Google perfume because I think the idea that any man would want to douse his body in the scent of a search engine is hilarious.

While it is clearly a cheap knock-off product, it has that same kitschy appeal of the fake Shuffle from Korea or even the iNoPhone. And where do you find something like that? Perhaps in the fake Google store in Istanbul, Turkey?

If my experience with geeky men is any indication I am gonna guess it smells like a spicy mixture of Cheetos, candy and Play-Doh. Snap!

Business travelers that give presentations frequently from their notebook will be pleased to hear that Gyration has announced a smaller version of its Air-Mouse called the M2000 Travel Air-Mouse. When used on your desk, the M2000 operates like any normal notebook mouse. Pick the mouse up and use it in the air and your hand movements turn in to cursor controls on the screen. Aptera Electric/Hybrid Car On Pre-Order for $500

Aptera

If you’re in the market for an environmentally friendly car that looks like an anemic space fighter, the Aptera may be for you. Unlike most electric/hybrid cars with this sort of look, the Aptera is actually going to be produced, and if you reserve yours now for a fully refundable $500, you can expect to receive it in (only) about a year. It seats 2.5 with plenty of room for luggage, and can supposedly hit 60 mph in about 10 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 95 mph. More pics, and specs on the superefficienttotallybadass engine options, after the jump.

Aptera

The design of the Aptera includes everything you might expect to find in a “normal” car, including airbags, a rear view camera, GPS navigation, and CD/MP3/DVD player with XM. It also includes a RFID key fob to start the car, and a solar assisted climate control system that keeps the car comfortable using energy from solar panels in the roof while you’re out doing whatever it is people who drive cars like this do. When it comes to the engine (the important part), you’ve got two options:

? All Electric – This Aptera is powered exclusively with batteries and will get you around town to the tune of approximately 120 miles depending on your driving conditions. At night you simply plug the Aptera into any standard 110 volt outlet and in just a few hours you will have a fully charged vehicle that will take you another 120 miles. The approximate cost of this option with all the features listed above will be $26,900.

? Plug-in Series Hybrid – This Aptera is also powered by an electric drive train but it is assisted by a fuel efficient gasoline powered generator which stretches your range significantly. In typical driving you may achieve over 300 miles per gallon and you will have range far beyond any passenger vehicle available today. The approximate cost of this option with all the features listed above will be $29,900.

Aptera

Be sure to click through to check out Aptera’s eye-gougingly slick website, featuring old people in bathing suits and not much in the way of relevant information.

Sim Card Spy Ear Remote Listening Device

Sim Card Spy Ear (Images courtesy Brando.com.hk)

Another day another covert gadget designed for spying on friends, family, co-workers and anyone else you just don’t trust. The Spy Ear though doesn’t require years of special spy training at MI6 to use. All you have to do is stick your SIM card into the device and call it from another phone. Once you’re connected you can just sit back and listen to what’s going on in the room where you’ve secretly planted it.

In theory since it relies on the GSM phone network the Spy Ear should work all over the world as long as the rechargeable batteries hold out and it’s in the range of a cell tower. Of course if you do plan to use the device internationally you might want to make sure you have a good roaming plan.

The Spy Ear is currently available from Brando.com.hk for $85.
