Static Electricity Powered Light Bulb

Static Electricity Powered Bulb (Image courtesy Edmund Scientific)

Who needs batteries to power a flashlight when human beings are able to generate in excess of 10,000 volts of static electricity? Not anyone carrying around one of these static powered bulbs, that’s for sure. Just hold onto one of the bulb’s wires and drag your feet as you walk across a carpeted floor. A static charge builds up and discharges through the bulb in your hand, causing it to glow.

The bulb works best in a darkened room, which is where you’d typically need a flashlight, but somehow I don’t see it replacing a Maglite anytime soon. Not only is it probably impossible to see where you’re going while using it, but you can’t exactly lay the smackdown on a home intruder with a couple of wires and a small bulb. (Unless the military has trained you to.) But it’s great as an experiment to keep the kids from shocking each other on a dry Winter day.

The static powered bulbs are available from Edmund Scientific for $4.95 each.

SILVER SEAL Antibacterial Dishwasher Safe Mouse & Keyboard

Silver Seal Antibacterial Mouse and Keyboard (Image via Seal Shield)
Everyone should have one of these!

If you have small kids or work in an office where several people share your mouse and keyboard you are probably aware that the mouse and keyboard of most computers are hotbeds for germs and viruses. Seal Shield has a new mouse and keyboard called the SILVER SEAL that have antibacterial properties and can be washed in the dishwasher.

This is the ideal mouse and keyboard for use in medical settings since the silver ion is embedded into the plastic so the antibacterial properties don’t wear off over time. When it comes time to clean the mouse and keyboard of dirt and debris, they are both completely submergible and dishwasher safe. The SILVER SEAL mouse and keyboard will begin shipping in November at an undisclosed price.

Sony officially announced today that the much-anticipated 40GB PS3 is heading to America and will be available for purchase on November 2. The 40GB PS3 version will retail for $399 in the U.S. and Canada and come bundled with Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray.

Sony also announced that effective immediately the 80GB PS3 console would be reduced in price to $499. The sacrifice the 40GB PS3 makes in the name of lower cost is PS2 compatibility. The 40GB PS3 will include HDMI out, Blu-ray drive, WiFi and all of the other features offered on other PS3 models with the exception of the PS2 compatibility and the reduction from four USB ports to two on the 40GB version.

Deconstructed Computer Case (?) Mod

Sky Puter

If you’re as much of an Iron Chef fan as I am, you’ll be familiar with the term deconstructed. Like, a how deconstructed caesar salad would involve serving all of the components of a mixed salad separately. A self-professed “bored tech support guy” made himself this deconstructed computer by suspending all of the components of a desktop in midair via cat5 cables and a couple of hangers. It’s fully functional and offers a number of advantages, including easy hardware upgrading, a tiny footprint, and spectacular ventilation. Not recommended for people who have small children or pet squirrels.

Chumby; Adorable, Interwebs Ready and Heralded by Cephalopods

chumblys.jpg

Chumby is a tiny, tiny widget box! It is your little window to the Internet land, both adorable and vaguely useful. The device runs on open source software, lets you surf the Internet, run personalized widgets, check email and do other types of social networking (Blogs, Myspace, Facebook, eBay). It is also a clock. Chumby features a rather small 3.5 LCD screen, WiFi connectivity, 128MB RAM, speakers, 2 USB outlets and plug for headphones. It also has a mysterious squeeze sensor. No one knows what for.

Chumby, your portable portal to the web, has just started to ship its first generation. Running 200$, the verdict is still out if it’s going to be the next iPod or whatever. Although, I really do hope to see more of the “startled octopus” logo.
