Lumencraft GatLight V3 Titanium & Carbon Fiber Flashlight

While the MagLite will probably remain my flashlight of choice, it doesn’t stop me from drooling over the endless supply of ‘designer’ flashlights that seem to be quite popular as of late. Take for example the GatLight V3 from Lumencraft. Besides looking like something that fell out of an astronaut’s toolbox, the V3 is actually made from aerospace-grade titanium as well as carbon fiber making it both extremely durable, and extremely light.

The high-efficiency white LED is rated at 240 lumens of maximum output and has a life expectancy of about 100,000 hours, or about 11 years of being continuously on. It also uses a rechargeable 3 volt lithium battery and while it won’t last quite as long as the bulb on a single charge, it does include proprietary regulation circuitry that maintains a constant light level as the battery starts to run out.

Not surprisingly the GatLight V3 Titanium comes with a price tag of $395, but your wife will totally understand once she sees that it comes with a wooden display box.

Blomus Umydo Humidifier

Blomus Umydo Humidifier (Image courtesy AllModern.com)

I just bought a humidifier to deal with the dry conditions that winter usually brings to my part of the country, but seeing this one makes me wish I’d waited a few weeks instead. From design group Blomus, who are well known for their stainless steel creations comes this truly unique humidifier that looks more like a decorative pond, or fancy water bowl for your dog.

I really don’t know how it works, or how effective it is compared to a traditional humidifier design, but you probably won’t find a better conversation piece for this years Christmas party.

It’s currently available from All Modern for $70.65.

Battery Caddy – Finally! No More Loose Batteries

Battery Caddy (Images courtesy Tools Aviation)
This is simple and kindda cool!
I’m all for organization, almost to an obsessive degree, but I don’t know if I’m really sold on the Battery Caddy. It was originally designed for pilots to carry batteries in their flight bag without them ending up all over the place, but is now available to anyone with similar organizational problems.

The caddies have special flexible teeth that ensures a battery won’t fall out no matter how much the caddy is banged around, and even has protection for the terminals on each end. But you know what I’ve found that also works great for storing batteries? Their original packaging. Brands like Duracell and Energizer already come in resealable plastic containers, and a pair of scissors is all you need to remove the cardboard top section making them even more compact. Keeping them in the original packaging also removes any doubt in my mind that they might have been used, but to each their own.

The Battery Caddy comes in a variety of sizes and configurations for carrying large or small amounts of the same size battery, or an assortment of different sizes. They also come in your choice of 7 different colors including a glow in the dark green, and range in price from as low as $4.95 up to $13.95.

Samsung High-Performance 64GB SATA II SSDs

Samsung 2.5-inch, SATA II Solid State Drive (Image courtesy Samsung)

In March of last year Samsung introduced a 32GB PATA SSD, which was followed by a 64GB SATA I version a year later. (March 2007) Well the company is now introducing a SATA II version of their 64GB SSD which not only promises faster read and write times, but less power usage as well.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, has become the first in the industry to sample 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch 64Gigabyte (GB) solid state drives (SSD) with a super-fast SATA (Serial ATA) II/native SATA interface. With a sequential write speed of 100Megabyte per second (MBps) and sequential read speed of 120MBps, the SATA II SSD is poised to expand the market for solid state drives from notebook PCs to corporate servers and other high-performance storage applications.

While 64GB doesn’t seem that impressive given the terabyte-sized hard-drives we now enjoy, I can also remember a time in the not-too-distant past when I couldn’t imagine filling up the massive 1.6GB drive on my first PC.

USB Lighter Is Cooler Than Kool

USB Lighter

I’m not much of a smoker, but that doesn’t stop me from owning a few Zippos just because they’re fun to play with. This flameless USB lighter from designer Nathan Gabriele might not be quite as fun, but it is a lot more practical. Instead of fluid, the lighter uses resistance coils powered by a battery, which is recharged via a USB port. There’s even some flash memory in there for good measure. Now all it needs is an SD card slot and a headphone jack and some ice blue LEDs and I’ll never need to buy another gadget ever again.

One For The Parents

Today I ran across a site that is not only an invaluable resource for parents but it’s also a good place to get information for your Christmas shopping. Kidazy.com is a website built by a young woman who takes the time to actually go and buy toys your kids might be longing for, she video tapes them as she begins her reviews of them and then writes up an extensive review for each one. Each review is done in amazing detail, just see for yourself in this small excerpt:

The toy itself, specifically the dragon is made of an extremely soft “fur”
sprinkled with glittering plastic strands (think Christmas tinsel)
throughout to give the toy a glittering magical look to it. The nostrils
and back spines are made from purple felt and the wings and horns are
made from a smooth fabric similar to that of the “color your own toy”
type toys. The left foot of the dragon has an embroidered swirl (as seen
in the Shining Stars logo) and a hard plastic silver star which appears
to be glued on but very securely so.
